Who Are We?
The Alberta Powerlifting Union (APU) is the strongest sport organization in the province, literally. Our sport tests the human body's capability to lift as much weight as possible through three events: squat, bench press, and deadlift.
Since the APU was founded in 1983, our volunteer-based organization has administered powerlifting activities and sanctioned contests in every corner of Alberta. While the word "powerlifting" might conjure certain images of the type of athlete that participates in our sport, we are 100% committed to providing an inclusive sport environment for all ages, genders, sizes, abilities, and disabilities.
There are many opportunities to participate as an athlete within the APU, whether its your first time competing or have aspirations of representing Canada at a World Championships. Furthermore, the APU is the only affiliated powerlifting federation to the Canadian Powerlifting Union and International Powerlifting Federation, the largest powerlifting federation in the world.
One of the cornerstones of the APU is our commitment to drug-free powerlifting. Every athlete, by virtue of membership, agrees to submit to in-competition and out-of-meet drug testing, which is governed by the Canadian Centre of Ethics in Sports, the same agency that tests Olympic athletes.
We also pride ourselves on hosting World Class competitions, with rigorous and ethical judging, performed in a safe and friendly environment. We would love to see you at our next competition! Please check our upcoming events for more information.
